Brazil’s business jet fleet retracted by 5 percent last year, falling from 803 in late 2015 to 762 late last year, while the in-country helicopter fleet decreased by 1 percent, from from 2,151 to 2,122, according to the newly released second annual Brazilian Yearbook of Civil Aviation. Still, the overall general aviation (GA) fleet in Brazil eked out 0.1 percent growth last year, but GA operations dropped 11 percent year-over-year.

The yearbook, released on Tuesday by the Brazilian Institute of Aviation (IBA) at the opening of the International Brazil Air Show (IBAS) in Rio, is a successor to Brazilian business aviation group ABAG’s now-discontinued yearbook, though it also covers commercial and experimental aviation. According to the IBA yearbook, 5,867 (or 26.8 percent of the 21,895 aircraft in the Brazil fleet) are classified as “experimental,” including 3,983 ultralights and 20 jets. Those aircraft are on average newer than the average age of general aviation aircraft in Brazil—12 years versus 27—and 91.5 percent have current airworthiness certificates, as opposed to only 59 percent of the GA fleet.

Regionally, the GA fleet in south Brazil grew by 2 percent; in the north and central-west, up 1 percent each; the southeast, which is where most of the GA fleet is concentrated in the country, down 1 percent; and the northeast, a growth leader in recent years, down 3 percent. Operations at major airports are also listed in the yearbook, although it excludes some important GA airports such as Sorocaba, where several business jet OEMs have major service centers.
